Cairo – Ahmed Helmy, Donia Samir Ghanem and Mona Zaki were appointed as the national ambassadors of UNICEF in Egypt.
In a ceremony commemorating UNICEF’s 70th anniversary, the actors as well as many public figures expressed their commitment to a better life for children.
The three actors join a global list of UNICEF Ambassadors in more than 190 countries around the world that includes world-renowned figures such as David Beckham, Kazem El-Saher, Nancy Ajram and Orlano Bloom.
“They are not only famous artists. They are also champions with a cause and passion, volunteering their time and capitalizing on their fame to serve children’s issues, and working to become an integral part of UNICEF’s advocacy for children.” said Mr. Bruno Maes, UNICEF Representative in Egypt in UNICEF celebration and the appointment of Egypt’s new national ambassadors.
During th cermony, ‘Imagine’; a song by Donia Samir Ghanem, UNICEF Egypt’s new-appointed national ambassador.
Female actor Mona Zaki said: “Today I raise my voice for all children and share their hopes and pain. I know for sure that all parents wish the best for their children. But sometimes we judge them according to our standards and hurt them by our actions. We need to get closer to our children, understand their needs and respect them.”
” I would like to put two issues on the agenda of the new ambassadors: child-trafficking and children with disabilities.” said Ambassador Nabila Makram Abdel Shahid, Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs in her speech at the ceremony.
According to Dr. Ghada Wally, Minister of Social Solidarity, there are “Nine million Egyptian child are below the poverty line. They face more forms of violence than physical and emotional violence such as early marriage and Female genital mutilation (FGM).
In his speech, actor Ahmed Helmy said: “I am happy to engage with UNICEF, and will exert my utmost efforts to be an effective voice which will contribute to making a positive change in the lives of our children.”
