Cairo – The Fulbright Commission (BFCE) is hosting a cohort of professionals and academics who are themselves Fulbrighters to discuss a variety of health-related issues that are considered perplexing problems for both state and non-state agencies.
BFCE invited many other experts, practitioners, medical stakeholders and students from different universities and institutions across Egypt and the Arab world to attend and share their expertise, experiences and concerns about ‘contemporary health issues‘.
On February 20th, a round-table discussion titled, “Access to healthcare,” was convened at Cairo’s Conrad hotel, to reflect on Healthcare Accessibility in the Arab world, with special reference to a local experience from the UAE.
Moderated by Dr. Noha Mahmoud Khalifa, Head of Nephrology Unit, Police Hospital in Cairo, the discussion focused mainly on the difficulties and barriers to the accessibility of healthcare for patients, which are most likely to come in the way.
The first keynote participant was Dana Dweik, a Palestinian from East Jerusalem and works as a manager at the Clinical Operations at Cleveland, Abu Dhabi.
Dweik shared with the attendees the end results of her experience to increase access to healthcare for the local community of Abu Dhabi. She highlighted the empirical approach of her studies to use statistics, computer programming and operations research to quantify performance with physicians and nurses alike.
Dweik graduated from University of Jordan with a degree in Pharmacy. A year and a half later she moved to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship to do her master’s in Healthcare Administration
Once she was back, Dweik was assigned to UAE, in order to lead a project with multidisciplinary group at the Abu Dhabi’s hospital, including physicians, nurses, patient access staff, contact center agents, interpreters and others to identify opportunities for improving access.
She added that numerous projects took place over a period of eight months including: physicians schedule management, workflow optimization, supply and demand analysis and space analysis.
“The end results were very fascinating,” she said. Continuous improvement projects were implemented across all ambulatory services and results were very successful. As clinic matured, and workflows became steadier, they were able to meet their targets and provide access to 1500 patient daily.
The discussion was followed by Question & Answer and briefing segments about the process, its funding and the work environments in which the projects were conducted.
Dr. Noha also concluded with useful remarks and recommendations about how Egyptians can benefit from such an experience that might help salvage and transform Egypt’s healthcare situation.
