Sinai (Egypt)– Sheikh Ibrahim al-Tarapiny, one of Sinai’s tribal leaders, pledged to protect the displaced, whether they are Muslims or Christians, stressing that he alongside his Sinai’s compatriots are together responsible for the lives of the vulnerable among them.
The pledge came during a phone call with the prime time TV show “Ten PM,” presented by media anchor Wael al-Ebrashy and broadcasted everyday on satellite channel “Dream”.
During his phone interview, al-Tarapiny said: “[expletive deleted] through our dead bodies that ISIS terrorists do harm to our Coptic brethren,” pointing out that the confrontation in Sinai has turned into guerrilla warfare.
It is noteworthy that a majority of Sinai tribal leaders have made the same pledge to safeguard Christians against ISIS aggression. They expressed their solidarity with the Coptic community across Egypt. As one leader indicated, “We will not give ISIS the opportunity to divide us or to drive a wedge among us.”
Another said, “We are in our struggle against ISIS scourge as united as we have never been before. Their mean end is to cause a sectarian strife between Muslims and Christians in Egypt, who are both tantamount to being the two wings of a bird, the two hands of a human, and the two sides of a coin. Can you imagine one might do without the other? [and] Who on earth can break that unity?! Throughout history, any attempt to divide us missed the mark and failed to reach its end. ISIS will fail miserably like its predecessors.”
This pledges and similar pledges of protection came following an ISIS affiliate group released a video threatening Egypt’s Coptic Christians, and vowing more hostile attacks to come against Egypt as well as commending its previous attack on Cairo’s Coptic cathedral in December 2016.
