Egyptian ambassador to UN assembly: Islam is a pro-women religion par excellence

Cairo – Ambassador Mervat El-Tallawy, Director-General of Arab Women Organization (AWO), stated that Islam is a pro-women religion par excellence and guaranteed them their full rights such as the right to identity assertion, and the right to choice, and ownership.

El-Tallawy said that the textual and practical evidence of Islam’s support to women empowerment are both well established as there is an entire Chapter of the Holy Quran named: The Women (Al-Nisa in Arabic) that addresses women issues in heritage, marriage, family, divorce and relationship to men in addition to a whole lot of issues.

“Some patriarchal traditions which are hold dear by the community undermine women’s rights, encourage extremist thought, and offend against Islamic message of tolerance, compassion and peace. These traditions are just the opposite of Islam in every sense,” she noted.

Her remarks came in a speech she gave before the panel discussion titled: “The role of the religious leaders and scholars in supporting the women empowerment,” organized by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) on the sidelines of meetings of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, currently held in New York.

This will be the 61st meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women. During the annual session, which runs March 13-24, the U.N. headquarters in New York hosts U.N. member states, U.N. organizations and nongovernmental groups.

Collectively, they are examining the progress women are making globally while also looking at ongoing challenges, problems and aspirations.

This year’s theme focuses on women and the changing world of work, something highlighted during the U.N.’s commemoration on this year’s International Women’s Day.
