Cairo – With aims to increase opportunities for knowledge sharing about health-related issues, Fulbright’s Regional Conference on ‘Contemporary Health Issues’, hosted in Cairo’s Conrad Hotel, between February 19th and 22nd 2017, was launched with a variety of guest speakers and participants who are real world, real time practitioners and academics in the medical, nursing and health advising fields.
The conference is convened under the auspices of the Bi-national Fulbright Commission in Egypt (BFCE) and is co-sponsored by AmidEast, Washington.
Pre-conference tours, activities, eateries and workshops are also held over the mornings and evenings of the conference days.

Holding the title “Total Quality Improvement in Hospitals,” The first plenary session highlighted the epidemiologic methods used in complex humanitarian emergencies such as rapid health assessment. More specifically, it shed light on health and nutritional priorities in emergencies, while employing a human rights-based approach to programming, monitoring and evaluation.
The session aimed to improve the capacity of relevant ministries of health staff working in emergency preparedness and response.
The first plenary session lasted for an hour and was moderated by Dr. Maged Mashaly, Professor of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Kasr El Einy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University.
The session first keynote speakers was Dr. Mohamed Safaa El-Deen Arafa, General Director of Fayoum University Hospitals and Dr. Hanaa I. Rady, Deputy Director of Aboul-Rish Childrens’ University Pediatric Hospital.
Dr. Rady and Dr. Arafa made two slide presentations respectively, titled, “5S-KAIZEN-TQM” Implementation in Fayoum University Hospitals,” which was introduced to the Fayoum University Hospitals seven years ago, and yielded immense results at all levels.
The word Kaizen is translated from Japanese in a number of ways, most simply as “change for the better.” kaizen aims to eliminate waste. Kaizen was first practiced in Japanese businesses after the Second World War, influenced in part by American business and quality-management teachers, and most notably as part of The Toyota Way. It has since spread throughout the world and has been applied to environments outside of business and productivity such as healthcare, psychotherapy, life-coaching …etc.

Dr. Arafa initiated a formal kaizen program at the University Medical Center in 2011 after reading about it. After the hospital’s success in engaging residents and staffers, patients and physicians in kaizen, he published “Kaizen: A Method of Process Improvement in the Emergency Department” in the Academic Medical Emergency Journal.

This plenary session was designed to build the capacity of public health practitioners working in the area of health emergencies in the Middle East and North African Region (MENA).
The session and keynote presentations were followed by a lunch that has more than five kinds of food from the Egyptian and Lebanese cousins.
